A lunchtime stop at Mill Pond in Newington today turned up a pair of
Hooded Mergansers. The pond has had a Red-Breasted Merganser in the
past, and Common Mergs sense when trout are stocked there for the
children's fishing derby. This is the first time in my experience
that Hoodeds have been seen there.

Another first for the pond came later in the day. Anita Shaffer
discovered a pair of American Wigeon there as well.

Local first-of-year Killdeer were seen alongside the Berlin Turnpike
late in the afternoon, and the Fox Sparrow pair remained in the back
yard for the fifth day.
