I was at Hammonasset from 9:30-4pm today. Right when I first arrived there
were two very high unidentified swans flying ENE, seen from from what I've been
told is called the Swan Pond (with the martin houses next to it). By the time I
got my scope out they were white dots with long necks. I had an unidentified
"saltmarsh" sparrow out in the marsh, seen from the observation deck at the end
of the trail to the right before you head out to Willard's Island. It was so far out it
could have been any of the 3 saltmarsh sparrow species. I also had a probable
Blackpoll Warbler (looked like the 1st winter female in Sibley) on Willard's Island,
but only caught a glimpse. Frustrating. "Did he identify anything?" you may be
asking. No luck finding any crossbills at the West Beach pines, but there were 5
Red-breasted Nuthatches and a Palm Warbler. There was a immature Laughing
Gull in with the gull mix in the West Beach parking lot. Also right near the West
Beach lot were 4 Lapland Longspurs in with about 30 Horned Larks and a
Savannah Sparrow. 17 Surf Scoters, 11 Red-throated Loons, & 2 Common
Loons from the Moraine Trail. I have to say that Hammo is still my favorite
scenic coastal location.
