Leser Black-backed Gull Winter 2006-2007
These comments are derived from the daily reports.
First Record 7 Sep 2006
Last Record 16 Apr 2007
This species is also likely in the summer, more so than Glaucous and
Iceland.
Reported from 11 towns
8 on the coast, Stamford, Westport-Milford, and Waterford-Groton
3 Inland. They seem to be mainly at the land fills. West Hartford,
Hartford, Windsor,
Most records are of single birds. There were 2 birds reprted at
Milford Pt. and 2 birds at Beardsley Park Bridgeport.
Birds in winter seem to take up residence in an area and become
fixtures for the season. The most reliable one was an adult at
Burring Hill beach in Westport. It was present from 7 September to 8
April. It also seems that in winter, adults are mostly reported.
This could be do to the fact that adults are more easily identified.
Immatures seem to be reported more often during the summer and don’t
stay in the area much. This needs to be studied more.
Every report is one more piece of data that helps one see the bigger
picture.
