Just ahead of the snow squalls, a mixed flock of pine siskins and common redpolls is now devouring niger at the Roaring Brook Nature Center feeders.? As always, be on the look out for Hoary Redpoll amidst all redpoll flocks.? For those, like myself, who felt that there must be many hundreds of redpolls to have a shot at hoary, I call your attention to the recently published American Birds 2007-2007 Christmas Bird Count edition for an article on a single Hoary that wintered at a nature preserve in Iowa last year.? Happy hunting!
Please keep in mind that Hoary is a difficult call and all field marks must be thoroughly observed and noted.? A photo would be preferable to single observer and even multiple observer identifications if at all possible.
