[CT Birds] house sparrows & mixed flock at Orange feeder

In regards to House sparrows not being interested in niger  seed,  we have a 
resident flock of about 30 or more house sparrows in our  yard for years.  
They seem to like whatever is available.  If the  sunflower chip feeder is 
emptied, they very willingly go to my niger seed  feeder, or suet or crumbs thrown 
on the ground.  They are not picky at  all.
 
Also at about 3:20-3:45PM today there was a mixed flock of  about 250-300 
crows and gulls circling over my neighbor's and my yard.  The  crows would roost 
in the trees a few seconds, then take off and circle again,  then repeat this 
until they all seem to have just departed.  I had checked  for possibly a hawk 
in the area, or an owl that maybe the crows were harassing  but I didn't 
notice any.  And  I don't know why the gulls would  be joining in with the crows 
in this activity, and then they all  departed.
