12/10 - Old Lyme: 3PM -- The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT which was reported a
couple of days ago in Old Lyme is still in the same thickets and bushes. Seems to
have a preference for the bushes with the red berries. (Lieutenant River Lane,
just past the Fulton-Theroux funeral home, in the thickets to the left.
Sometimes the bird was down the embankment.)

Also at this location at the top of the very tall spruce/fir tree (I soooo
need a course in basic botany!) directly across from the funeral home:
                               1 red-shouldered hawk.

Earlier in the afternoon: 1 large sharp-shinned hawk or small Coopers hawk

It flew into the parking lot of the
Old Lyme Shopping Center, landed, and proceeded to hop into the shrubs/hedge in
front of the Hideaway Restaurant. I could hear him rustling around in there
for a few minutes and then he flew out and landed several hundred feet away in
a tall tree not far from the Old Lyme Bd of Ed building. By the time I ran
back to the car to get my binoculars he was gone. I have never seen a hawk hop
into a hedge. Must have been something tantalizing in there!

Old Lyme Boat Launch/Observation Platform off Smith Neck Rd (off Rt 156):
4PM - 4:30PM with Hank Golet:
                   1 SHORT-EARED OWL
                   3 northern harriers
                   5 buffleheads
Thank you Hank for helping me find my first ever short-eared owl!
