[CT Birds] Old Lyme Xmas Bird Count - Dec 30, 2007

Hi all - 

Count compiler Barbara Barron is not a list member, so I volunteered to post a quick overview of the 2007 Old Lyme Christmas Bird Count.   As always, it will be held on the last Sunday of the CBC Period, this time on Dec 30th. instead of a January date.   While many people have used the OL CBC as their "first birds of the new year list" outing, this year it can serve as your "Last Chance to Add to the 2007 List".

The compilation will again be held at the Essex, CT Town Hall, on West Ave

beginning at 5:00pm with a pot-luck dinner (yummy!) supplied by the Potapaug Audubon Society volunteers, followed by the List Reading.

The List Reading will begin PROMPTLY at 5:30pm, coordinated by former compiler Patty Pendergast.    In past years, the List Reading time was highly variable, so we will try to get it going at a reasonable time so everybody can get home to watch the finish of the afternoon football games.    ;-)   

This count has a long history, and was the "home" count to Roger Tory Peterson.   It encompasses Hammonasset Beach St. Park to the Old Lyme coastline, and up the CT River to Selden Island and Deep River.    Last year's count highlight was a Western Grebe. 

My "job" is to canoe out to Great Island and walk the salt marsh, searching for lingering salt-marsh sparrows and other goodies.   I do this at high tide, which this year will be 3:40pm, so if anybody is interested in paddling with me, I will probably start about 11am or Noon.
