As part of today's New Haven CBC, I conducted a migration-watch from
7-9am at the large field at the intersection of Rte 34 and Grassy Hill
Road in Orange. The field provides a nice overlook to the north. Being
one of the few wide open spaces in the immediate area, it tends to
pull in really good stuff by Orange's standards. Highlights included a
nice goose flight of 600+ Canadas with 1 CACKLING GOOSE and 1 SNOW
GOOSE. Also 20 Horned Larks, 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and 1 SNOW BUNTING.
Four COMMON REDPOLLS also flew past.
Lee Schlesinger, the leader of the Orange sector of the count,
returned in the afternoon to find a dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
hovering over the fields! I stopped by just before dusk but was unable
to refind the bird.
