>From Sarah Johnston-
12/18 - Farmington, Riverside Cemetery (lower road, next to Farmington River) - 7:30am - 1 WOOD DUCK (drake), 1 GADWALL (hen), feeding with Canada Geese, American Black Ducks, and Mallards. Off to one side, 1 HOODED MERGANSER (drake).
In with the Canada Geese, I saw one goose that seemed to be smaller overall, with a smaller bill. I couldn't get a really good look due to constant dabbling by the geese, rising mists from the river, and my tight schedule.
The open water here is shrinking as temperatures plummet.
In watching the geese and ducks sleeping and resting on the ice, dabbling in the near-freezing flowing water, and bathing in it too, one appreciaties the birds' hefty fat deposits!
