Dave -
Euro Trash -
South Cove, Old Saybrook, mid-80s, me sitting in my canoe and chumming a
"slick" of chopped-up éclair shells ( a long story, there), surrounded by
about 300 Bonaparte's Gulls, two different Black-headed Gulls, and four
different Little Gulls! At that point, I don't think there were any
confirmed nestings of those two in NA. I believe Bob Dewire and the DPNC
group were all standing on the causeway that day, watching The Gull Show.
That year, I photographically ID'd 3 different individual Black-heads and 7
different Littles at South Cove, and documented that the adult Black-head
went from basic (winter) head color to full breeding (Alternate) in 18 days.
Really cool. Frank Mantlik and I canoed out to the CT river breakwaters to
photograph the birds, and I slipped on a wet spot and almost threw my Nikon
200mm lens into the River. Yipes!
South meets North -
Sept 27, 1981, after a Brookline Bird Club pelagic trip out of Chatham, MA,
featuring gannets, shearwaters, kittiwakes and the like, Dave Titus and John
Maynard and I (was George Zepko there? I don't remember) got the Fork-tailed
Flycatcher in Chatham at the end of the day.
