The Pine Grosbeaks are indeed eating the seeds from the crabapples and
leaving the fruit.  This is an important point!  If you see the ground
under the ornamentals littered with discarded, mashed fruit there have
probably been Pine Grosbeaks feeding there even if they are not
present when you are.  Keep this in mind when looking for them in
areas where they have not yet been reported!
