On Dec 27th Andy Brand, EJ Raynor, and I observed a "Greater" Common
Redpoll (subspecies rostrata) at a residence off of Hageman Shean Road
in Goshen. About 35 redpolls were present in the area. This individual
was noticeably larger, darker, and more heavily streaked than any of
the "Southern" Common Redpolls (nominate flammea) present. The bird's
bill also appeared to be larger. Photos were difficult to take on
Thursday thanks to dark skies and a constant light rain.
Also in this flock was a strikingly pale and 'frosty' adult male
Common Redpoll. All in all it was a very educational flock of birds.
