Ring-Billed Ducks?? Of course, I meant Ring-NECKED Ducks. My caffeine deficit has been adjusted and so I submit this corrected entry. Sorry for any confusion.
from Sarah Johnston
1/2 - Farmington - Farmington River, from Riverside Cemetery - 3 RING-NECKED DUCKS (2m, 1 f), 1 GREATER BLACK-BACKED GULL eating a dead fish in the shallows. At feeders: Red-Breasted Nuthatch and Brown Creeper continue; Song Sparrow and Tree Sparrow have been visiting for the past week.
Of course, "Ring-Necked Duck" would make more sense as a name for this species, wouldn't it? :) And of course it is used as a common name by many.
My first sighting for 2008 was the White-Crowned Sparrows that come to the feeders before dawn. I hear their calls from the outside deck around 5:30am. Cardinals are the other early visitors, and these two species are the last to leave in the evening.
