I was just reading some websites about house sparrow deaths  and found this 
reference to  TRICHOMONAS GALLINAE – TRICHOMONIASIS  IN WILD BIRDS.  Symptoms 
match what I was observing in the house  sparrows....difficulty swallowing as 
the bird tries to eat.
I  will make sure to disinfect my bird baths as well, as  this could be a 
possibility too.
