Bev,
In 20 years of wildlife rehabilitation, I've never seen trichomonas (also known
as canker) in sparrows - only in pigeons, doves and occasionally raptors.
The most likely cause of illness in feeder birds would be salmonella, which
is common in feeding stations that aren't regularly maintained, cleaned.
Feeders should be thoroughly cleaned weekly with a 10% bleach solution:
1 part bleach, 9 parts water, then very well rinsed and dried. Also
clean areas below feeders.

I was just reading some websites about house sparrow deaths and found this
reference to TRICHOMONAS GALLINAE – TRICHOMONIASIS IN WILD BIRDS. Symptoms
match what I was observing in the house sparrows....difficulty swallowing as
the bird tries to eat.
I will make sure to disinfect my bird baths as well, as this could be a
possibility too.
