Extralimital Maine - If any of you are in Maine in the winter there is a unique spot to check out. I was in Mid-coast Maine for the New Years holidays and checked out the Maine RBA . It listed " Black Vulture and a large group of Bald Eagles on Route 1 in Warren". My neuvo birder sister-in-law suggested I check it out as she found it on her own and observed a lot of raptors. I stopped on my way back to CT at the Mainely Poultry Turkey Farm on coastal Route 1 in Warren, Maine. As we approached I observed eagles on the wing. About 60 yards from he road in one tree there were 9 adult Bald eagles. It looked like a tree on the Chilkat River except there were plenty of other large birds to boot. In a cluster of 4 trees I observed 12+ Bald Eagles, 5 Osprey, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 1 Black Vulture, a possible Golden Eagle, Ravens and Crows...There was more and I could have looked further but a second snow storm was looming and the previous storm had left no shoulder to park so it was a little hairy to set up the scope. It was a site to see Osprey and Black Vulture in a snow storm, in winter, in Maine.
The Turkey Farm had quite a stank going...the speculation is that the rodents attracted to the farm and the turkey processing waste keeps these birds around in dead winter. Apparently the eagles also feed on the fish some of the ice fisherman leave out on the local lakes. I hear they land quite close to the fisherman. The eagles and osprey also hunt the tidal St. George River bridge area just down Route 1.
They have recorded Golden Eagle there the previous 2 winters so apparently this gathering has been going on for a while. The local newspaper ran an article about it a while back...other than that I did not see much on-line. If anybody is heading up...e-mail me for specifics.
This settles it... I am getting a telephoto lens for the Cannon.
