>From Rick Gedney:
I have been in contact with some additional local birders who have birded the Maine-ly Poultry Farm in Warren. I have also e-mailed the owners of the farm who enjoy seeing the eagles (and are known for the good quality of the organic poultry) to get their take.
My pre-visit information from a local paper about Osprey was incorrect and my snowy sightings are though to be a group of whitish 2nd & 3rd year eagles. From a bonified local source:
The consensus from
local birders, particularly those who get to the
turkey farm regularly and consistently, is that you
had 2d and 3d year eagles. In these birds, the head is
turning white and a dark eye stripe is prominent; the
body is generally the dark color of an osprey.
The Balds, BV and RL Hawk are there and the site is indeed a special place.
Maine Birds
from a member of Maine Audubon:
"37 BALD EAGLES in Warren from the poultry farm to the
bridge at the Thomaston line. The largest
concentration of eagles, 33, were in the tree line of
a field across from Old Settlers Rd. The breakdown of
the eagles is as follows :17 adults, 7 first year, 9
second year, 2 third year and 2 immature birds who
were behind branches so we could not get an accurate
read. It was a spectacular sight!"
I apologize for bringing such an unprofessional observation about the Osprey to this digest. Lesson learned...I was suspect and should a have trusted my instinct. The BV sucked me in.... I was prejudiced by the information I had, the weather conditions were bad and I should have omitted the unsure from this digest.
