1/12 -- Here are the highlights of an afternoon spent at several locations in
West Haven, Milford and Stratford
Caswell Cove, Milford - 1 m. WHITE-WINGED SCOTER with a group of buffleheads;
1 northern harrier
Frash Pond, Stratford - 50 canvasbacks, 16 ruddy ducks, 14 hooded mergansers
Mondo Pond, Milford - many Am. wigeons (no Eurasian), ringed-neck ducks,
hooded mergansers
West Haven from boat launch to Merwin Pt - approx. 20 long-tailed ducks off
Merwin Pt, huge rafts of greater scaup and several smaller groups of common
goldeneye and Am. wigeon (no Eurasian); 8 black-bellied plovers at Savin Rock;
horned grebes abundant everywhere - 1 group of 11 swimming together; 2
red-throated loons, 2 common loons, 1 red-tailed hawk
1 Am. coot at the boat launch and unfortunately several hunters in boats
there too.
