Around here they have the red tail and coopers down pat! And I agree that they use them deliberately for effect. Whether it be to clear the feeder or the area they are occupying, very intelligent birds!
Many, many years ago I was overwintering, in an outside flightcage, a first year bluejay who had been transferred to me from another rehabber. The bird had poor feathering and I was slowly removing primary flight feathers to force a molt. The bird spent the winter with me.
We had 2 young dobermans at the time, and I had to repeatedly and constantly , throughout the day and early evening, call them back to the house as they would tend to wander up into the woods.
By the end of the winter, much to my dismay and surprise the blue jay would clearly call out "Hannah, Greta, come on" By spring the bird had finally replaced all the poor feathering and was released. I could only pray he had the rest of blue jay talk down as well and would soon forget the dog calls. :))))
