Hi all,
In addition to the killer Scott's Oriole in NYC, there are a few other
great birds in the northeast right now:
- Great Gray Owl in Jackson, ME (5+ hrs from Hartford)
- adult Ross's Gull at Niagara Falls, NY
- Slaty-backed Gulls in Gloucester, MA and Ithaca, NY
- a drake Tufted Duck was present in Rhode Island for a few days last week
Also, Matt Young on the Cayuga, NY listserv notes that Bohemian
Waxwings are drifting southward into that region, which may bode well
for us finally getting a reliable flock somewhere in the northern part
of the state. Back in 1994, the last time BOWAs were reliable in CT,
they were found in mid-February and hung around well into March. So if
you haven't been lucky enough to see this species yet, your best
chance probably lies ahead.
Winter birding is far from over, even if the first "spring" blackbird
flocks are right around the corner.
