My daughter had some work to do Sunday p.m. in New York, so I accompanied her on the train. While she took care of her business uptown, I went to Union Square Park to join the throngs looking at the Scott's Oriole. It is a great find, and it seems to be very comfortable in this small park. When birders were telling non-birders that it is usually found in Arizona or New Mexico, people would say something along the lines of "he ought to be in Arizona where he can watch the Super Bowl!" One Giants fan even said that maybe it is a good luck sign, that a bird from Arizona would come to New York City and be noticed right before the big game which the Giants are playing in the bird's home.
Man of us recall that in the summer of 2004 a North American first-ever Red-Footed Falcon appeared in Massachusetts. People even nicknamed it Red Sox for its bright red legs and feet. Sports fans know what happened to the Boston baseball team in the fall of 2004...
So is the Arizona oriole a sign for the New York team in 2008 the way the Eurasian falcon was for the Massachusetts team in 2004? ;-)
