[CT Birds] two odd observations

Birders,

I did not actually witness either event, though I
thought them interesting enough to pass on.

I was just told by a student that three gulls fell
from the sky and died on Friday, January 25th in front
of Waterford High School. This happened almost
simultaneously. I just confirmed the story with his
teacher. One flew head first into the ground with
enough force to bury its beak in the frozen ground. A
custodian took the birds away so I don't know what
species they were - probably Herrings. Thoughts?

I have a large white-faced hornet nest in the
backyard. Last week my father saw a bird go into it
at dusk, apparently to roost. Has anyone heard of
birds roosting in abandoned hornet nests before?
