1/28 - Farmington, Batterson Park Pond -- 1 male LESSER SCAUP
Winchester, South Road, Winchester Cemetery -- 8-10 PINE GROSBEAKS
Winchester, Laurel Way -- 1 COMMON RAVEN
I had an appointment today in the offices right near Batterson Park Pond, so I
checked it out after I left. There was one male Lesser Scaup and one female
Common Goldeneye at 11:30. The Lesser Scaup flew off a few minutes after I
spotted it, but may return, as I think one was here about 4 days ago. I didn't see
any Ring-necked Ducks.
Then I headed to Winchester to look for those 2 Bohemian Waxwings but no luck
there. I did find 8-10 Pine Grosbeaks at 2:15 in the Winchester Cemetery (name
in my atlas) on South Road. They were moving from deciduous tree to spruce,
but they spent most of the time blending into the spruces. Once they were in the
spruces they were silent and invisible (unless on an outer branch with some sky
behind them). I found them by walking up and down the street and listening for
their almost-Greater-Yellowlegs-like flight calls. Further south on South Rd there
were about 15 Cedar Waxwings. Nearby at the corner of Laurel Way and Platt
Hill Rd there were about 10 Cedar Waxwings. A Common Raven flew over Laurel
Way. If you follow South Road even further south it turns into Saw Mill Hill Rd (or
Saw Mill Rd?) and where this road meets Starks Rd there is yard with an apple
tree loaded with 100's of apples. No grosbeaks or bohemians here today, but a
good spot to check if someone's in the area. There were 50+ Robins, 10+
Starlings, a Cedar Waxwing, and a House Finch eating the fruit an hour before
sunset.
