The Western Tanager was intermittently present all morning, but was not seen
in the afternoon as far as I know. The only place it appeared was in the
dense grove of young cedars southwest of the Mohegan I restrooms in front of
the small pond. I believe it was sheltering from the strong and cold north
wind, and eating cedar and possibly bittersweet berries.
No one was able to locate the Orange-crowned Warbler during the morning, as
it did not appear either near the Tanager nor with the flock of Juncos moving
around the area. I had pretty much given up on it when someone came over
to Marty Moore and I and said he had seen it in the grove of trees to the
west? of the M-I restrooms. (Towards the campground parking area). When I went
to investigate it was indeed there, mostly on the ground under the cedars with
1 or 2 Pine Warblers and a single Robin. It stayed for another half hour or
so and provided reasonably good (though distant)looks in the shade of the
cedars, just across the path from the restrooms.
