Hi All,

I am just dropping the group a line as the Big January competition is obviously drawing to a close over the next couple of days. As I said before the deadline to submit your lists or numbers to me will be midnight on Sunday 3rd of February. Please send me a list of species seen in a word document format such as Word or Excel or posted into the body of your email. If you don’t have the list in electronic format then just a total figure will be acceptable. Please note, only submit your list if you have over 90 species or more on it.

In previous years I recall we had a problem with lists that were initially missed off so I am suggesting that on Monday evening I will post a list of names of people who have submitted Big January lists (just in case yours is languishing in my junk mail folder). Please check that message to see that your list is included and has been received by myself. Barring further submissions I will post the results of the ‘competition’ to the board on the evening of Tuesday the 5th.

A note on ‘countable’ birds. The bird has to be an accepted species by the Avian Records Committee of Connecticut, so I am afraid the Swan Goose or Muscovy Duck on your local pond or the Helmeted Guineafowl coming to your feeder does not count towards your Big January List. Neither do hybrid birds so please leave off those ‘Nelson’s Gulls’ or strange duck or goose combinations you might have seen. Finally please only count accepted full species, no ‘Oregon’ Junco, ‘Gambel’s’ White-crowned Sparrows, or ‘type 4’ Red Crossbills. Any queries (apart from about the taxonomy of Iceland Gulls!!!!) feel free to ask.

Please send lists too streatham2003 at aol.com

Regards,

Luke Tiller
