To add to Jan's observations about the Hartford Crow roosts:
There was a story that ran on ABC television (I think) last week about the roosting crows and how driving on I-84 in West Hartford in the evening as they are flying in is reminiscent of scenes from Alfred Hitchcock....etc. In the teaser for this story, they referred to "black birds" and in the story itself they called them "big black birds." Never called them Crows! Pretty bizarre.
I was in an upper level of the Hartford Hospital employee parking garage one evening around 4:00 p.m. and there the view was astounding, as hundreds and hundreds of Crows seemed to fly right at you, then veered up and over the garage on their way to the roosts. Truly awesome.

On my way to work this morn (6:30), passed the crow roost in Hartford which
is now in the trees around the twin apartment towers on the west side of
Hartford near I-84.
The eastern sky was just showing a pinkish glow and the skyline was a
sillouette when the trees appeared to erupt with thousands of fluttering
black confetti which of course were the crows heading north for breakfast at
the various landfills and fields in Windsor. Made for a magical scene
straight from The Birds!
