Observing Siskin Courtship

While filling the feeders at 2:00 today, sunny and 36 degrees here in my yard in Harwinton, I heard the call of Siskins coming from a near tree. The typical rising ZZZZZ call notes were constant with interspersed buzzing notes. When I looked up at the caller, their were 2 birds on a high branch, with one, I presume a male, courting a female. The male was calling and dancing around her with raised feathers while issuing the continual calls and buzzing notes for about 3 minutes, then taking flight. I have had 4 Siskins here since December, usually, but not always, feeding in with Redpolls.

So hear it is, Jan 31st, and the Siskins are beginning their courtship displays already. It is not unusual to see this during late Jan into spring according to Bent's book. In fact, back in the 70's, we had a pair nest here in the yard with young showing up at the feeder by late March or April if I remember correctly.

Thanks Siskins - I believe you are telling me the back of winter is broken, and eternal Spring is on the way!-yes!
