3:15 - 4:30 PM Eagleville Preserve, Mansfield
Since the sky cleared around 2 I decided to run over to Eagleville just for
a look around. Last time I was there I saw not a bird. The lake is mostly
open water, and there were 3 common merganser males looking lonely. I took a
short walk in the preserve and stuck my head out into a corn field bordering
it. I saw something flutter in the brush and looked up to see a tiny bird.
Thought at first it was a Chickadee but a quick look and I knew it was a
Golden-crowned Kinglet. In just minute a 2nd 1 appeared, sitting on the same
branch looking back at me. It was an M-F pair, and the colors were brilliant!!
The male's head stripe was orange and looked about half the width of his
head. The female was bright gold. The rear of the male's wings were also very
yellow. I don't think I ever saw them that bright before. Smiled all the
way back to the car. I did see a small flock of juncos though, just to
remind me of the season.
