Today did some birding before the snow arrived..
Rt 272, just north of Norfolk, saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE fly cross the rd.
In Canaan on Weatogue Rd by the Housatonic river, had 15 early inland RING-NECKED DUCK in with 12 COMMON MERGs.
This area was abundant with Red-tailed hawks all along the river and the farm land near it.. We also had a light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in a tree near Weatogue Rd. Also of interest was a Barred Owl at mid day perched on a wire crossing the rd.
It would seem this river area might be abundant with rodents to support so many predators. Just a guess.
On Clayton Rd in Canaan, we saw 15 PINE GROSBEAKS eating from an apple tree beside a house there.
