In regards to the role alien House Sparrows (Finches), and Starlings play towards the survival of our Eastern Bluebirds, it doesn't take detailed studies or articles to know the effects both play on our indigenous species. All you need to do is ask any Bluebird trail monitor and they can tell you of the effects first hand. Dave Rosgen is a good one to ask, and he will have much documented information to share on this subject I'm sure.

I too have had many encounters with both these alien birds for over 25 plus years, and saw the effects first hand from my 200 plus Bluebird boxes I had placed here in Harwinton CT through most of these years. Before concerned people started building Bluebird boxes, the Starling was a big competitor of natural nesting sites, often chasing off the Bluebirds through their superior size and belligerence. As the use of Bluebird boxes began to appear, The application of 1-1/2" entrance holes tended to eliminate the Starling, but the House Sparrow was still a problem, and is to this day. Their are countless examples of the Sparrows effects and successes over the Bluebird's nesting success, but for sure, they are a very close second, only to natural factors the Bluebirds need to overcome.

If anyone might be interested in what these factors are, contact me and I will send you an E mail of the ones I know and have experienced.
