On February 14, I saw 50-60 turkeys in one person's yard on Creamery Road in Durham. Today (Feb. 17), I saw eight red wing blackbirds feeding on the ground beneath the feeder. This is the earliest I have noticed red wing blackbirds in my neighborhood in nearly 20 years of residing here.
While walking around the area this morning, a red shoulder hawk flew above me near the Coginchaug River and a pair of mallards were in the river.
A host of birds to the feeder this winter, besides the usual birds an eastern towhee visited two weeks ago. Hitting the suet regularly are downys, flickers, carolina wrens, and red bellied woodpeckers.
