Wow, the checklist really grew today with a preliminary 128 total for the count so far.
Some highlights:
Great numbers of waterfowl in Norwalk including:
325 Brant, 130 American Wigeon, 80 American Black Ducks, 525 Long-tailed Ducks, 75 Bufflehead, 180 Common Goldeneye, along with 110 Ruddy Turnstones and 77 Dunlin.
A Redhead in Somers.
An inland White-Scoter in Derby.
A report of 5 Black Scoters in Newtown (awaiting details) and 2 in Milford.
Lots of waterfowl in Groton too with respectable counts of Bufflehead and Hooded Mergansers.
An inland Red-throated Loon in Derby!
American Bittern in Madison.
21 Black Vultures scattered about the state.
3 inland Rough-legged Hawks that we may need to request details on.
Merlin in Monroe.
Peregrine Falcon in Norwalk.
Killdeer in Westport.
Lesser Black-backed Gull in Wethersfield
Awaiting details on a Glaucous Gull reported in Milford.
(Too bad I didn't think to recruit someone to go to the Windsor landfill on Friday to add to the gull list).
Looks like a good effort was put into owling this year with 5 species reported.
More loads of Red-breasted Nuthatches.
2 Gray Catbirds in Norwalk.
A second Brown Thrasher.
An Orange-crowned Warbler reported from Monroe...additional details requested. No report of the Hammo bird.
Good numbers of Fox Sparrows reported. Some counts may need to be double checked.
More White-crowned Sparrows, which we probably have to go over report-by-report.
3 Lapland Longspurs reported in Orange.
60 Common Redpolls statewide with the high count of 18 in Danbury.
20 Pine Siskins with a high count of 9 in New Milford.
4 more Evening Grosbeaks reported in Hebron...send them over to Meriden or Southbury please!
One more day to add to this list and we have passed (preliminarily) last year's record high count of 126. And remember it's not too late to enter any sightings you've had over the weekend.
Thanks to all of you who have shared your data.
Sincerely,
Patrick Comins, Meriden
