2/17 Essex, with Joe Bear, Luke Tiller (all volunteers
for Eagle Festival)
Pettipaug Yacht Club, off River Rd, 10:00-1:20 - 8
BALD EAGLES, 1 dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 2
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN
HARRIER, 13 TURKEY VULTURE, 18 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS,
usual ducks. The most surprising sight was a fly-by
RING-BILLED GULL wearing bright fuscia-pink wing tags
on each inner wing.
2:00-3:30pm Eagle-viewing cruise boat - 9 BALD EAGLES,
2 dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (1 at marshes around North
Cove; 1 on Knott Is.).
2/17 Madison, Hammonassett S.P.- 8:30-9:20am,
4:00-5:00pm , with Joe Bear & Luke Tiller- Many birds
feeding in/under cedars along entrance
road/campgrounds, including robins, 100+ cedar
waxwings (looked unsuccessfully for a bohemian),
juncos, white-throats, 1 PINE WARBLER. No sign of the
orange-crowned warbler nor western tanager, though I
suspect both are still present. We also had 1
LONG-EARED OWL(seen), and 1 GREAT HORNED OWL(heard).
