Just returned from a very easy and exciting birding trip with a friend to
the North Fork of LI, then the Montauk area and Shinnecock Inlet. In spite of
seeing thousands upon thousands of seaducks, several NORTHERN GANNETS, and a
very cooperative AMERICAN BITTERN, what I will most retain from this trip will
be what I learned about observing geese. For me it was "geese 101". We saw
a PINK-FOOTED GOOSE, a BARNACLE GOOSE, several snow geese, including an
imm., and a few brant, all of these among huge flocks of Canada geese. Hard work!
I will never look the same way again at a flock of Canada geese. I just
hope I don't kill myself on the road as I slam on the brakes to check out what's
in the fields! I think that one of CT's birding organizations needs to design
and sell a bumper sticker that says something like:

"Caution: Birders on Board -- we brake for birds!"
