Dear Birders,

Almost all of the responses to the question of, where, when and who
established the 1st NWR were, Pelican Island, Florida in 1903, Theodore
Roosevelt. Mardi W. Dickinson from the CTBirds list-serve has provided more
detail of this great act, started in the late 1800s to very early 1900s.

I want to thank everyone for their responses, which have made everyone, at
least on these lists, aware of the need for more efforts in conservation to
save our precious natural resources, without them we will not see the birds
we love!

Scott R,
What a great idea! Your Trivia answer is and some other very interesting
facts. President Theodore Roosevelt was was a very interesting Man.
Pelican Island in Sebastian, Florida was the first National Wildlife
Refuge created by President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903. President
Roosevelt signed an executive order establishing Pelican Island as the first
federal bird reservation. It was the first time that the federal government
set aside land for the sake of wildlife. President Roosevelt established a
network of 55 bird reservation and national game preserved for wildlife -
the forerunner to the national wildlife refuge system
Ornithologist, Frank Chapman and William Dutcher knew that protecting the
birds of Pelican Island required additional protection. In 1901, They
visited President Roosevelt at his home in Sagamore Hill, New York, and
appealed to his strong conservation ethic.  the American Ornithologist’s
Union and the Florida Audubon Society led a successful campaign to pass
legislation in Florida calling for the protection of non-game birds. Paul
Kroegel was one of the first four wardens hired by the Florida Audubon
Society to protect water birds from market hunters. Paul Kroegel was hired
as the first national wildlife refuge manager. He was paid $1 a month by the
Florida Audubon Society, as Congress had not set aside funds for this
executively created refuge.
Cheers,

Fellow Birders,

I thought this would be a great piece of trivia concerning Wildlife Refuges;

What is the name of the first National Wildlife Refuge, what state is it
located in, what year was it established & who made it happen?

Answer will come tomorrow this same time.
