Hi everyone,
As the volunteer coordinator for The Nature Conservancy's Devil's Den
Preserve in Weston, I'm looking for one or more experienced birders to
resume the forest interior bird counts that were established within the
preserve in the 90's. These counts were originally coordinated by Bob
Askins for the COA at sites throughout Connecticut. We discontinued
surveys at Devil's Den in 2000 when Lise Hanners and Steve Patton took
on additional responsibilities and were no longer able to pursue the
ornithological studies at The Den. We would like to resume the surveys
for a period of at least 5 years, or at least long enough to detect
changes in species composition and abundance since the prior period of
survey. We have four routes that we would like surveyed, each of which
requires 2 morning visits during the course of the breeding season (1st
and 2nd half of June). This was the protocol that was followed in the
90's; I would also like to add a third period that would occur during
the last two weeks of May. Volunteers need to be able to identify all
the summer residents likely to occur within the forested preserve by
song and ideally by call note. If you are interested, please contact me
or Steve Patton - I can be reached by phone at 203-226-4991 ext. 203, or
email at lmastropolo at tnc.org <mailto:lmastropolo at tnc.org> . Steve
Patton can be reached at ext. 201 or by e-mail: spatton at tnc.org
<mailto:spatton at tnc.org> .
-Lia
