The preservation of Pelican Island by Teddy Roosevelt was a pioneering
achievement to help prevent the hunting of birds for feathers to adorn women's hats.
But he had a much wider role in raising the public's awareness of the need to
preserve habitat and establish rules for the sustainable hunting of birds and
wildlife. Anyone interested in reading an 816 page tome about this
fascinating man could tackle T.R.: THE LAST ROMANTIC by H.W. Hands.
