[CT Birds] Any Ospreys yet?

Sarah, it is a bit early for an Osprey by roughly two weeks. Having said
that, there have been a couple of Broad-winged Hawks reported recently that
are early by about a month. There have been winter reports of Broad-wingeds
in the northeast in recent years that historically were simply considered
in error but now are being given credence (I think there has been photo
evidence but don't remember for sure). The recent reports of Broad-wingeds
could be, and probably are, due to birds that wintered relatively nearby
rather than representing arriving migrants from traditionally wintering
areas. So if indeed you did see an Osprey it would almost certainly be a
bird that did not travel very far south this past winter. Of course if
several more Osprey are reported this week it would throw that theory out
and mean a significant shift in Osprey migration timing has occurred. I'll
be very surprised if that's the case but time will tell.

Dave
