After reading the depressing stories about callous disregard for avian life,
an uplifting tale is in order. I was getting my hair cut a couple of years ago
when a small crowd gathered outside the window. My barber went over to see
what was going on and came back to say that a fairly large bird had hit the
window of the Laundromat next door and was sitting on the ground. I got out of the
chair with half a haircut, went outside and saw a sharpie sitting with its
head erect, which suggested its neck was not broken. I told the people it was a
sharpie and asked them to leave the bird alone and see if it recovered. A man
and women with loads of laundry in the Laundromat posted themselves as guards
to keep people away from the bird. About 10 minutes later they came into the
barbershop to report that the bird had just flown away.
These were not birders, they were just good people.
