Many Springs ago, about the time Foxwoods Casino opened, I was driving up
Shewville Road in Ledyard and I came upon two twenty-something guys in dress
pants, expensive shoes, and white shirts standing in the road in front of
their car which had NY plates. They were very cautiously using two sticks to
try and shepherd a large snapping turtle across the road. The turtle was
obviously on her way to lay eggs and they came across her smack dab in the
middle of the road. I stopped, got out, picked up the turtle (there is a
trick to handling snapping turtles without getting bit), and moved her off
the road. These guys were obviously city folk headed for the casino and
obviously distinctly afraid of the turtle but they had stopped their car so
no one could get by and they were determined to make that turtle safe. I
have to admit I found it amusing how stunned they looked when I just picked
the thing up and carried it to the side of the road but I remember to this
day how impressed I was that these guys were doing the decent thing even
though it was clearly out of their comfort zone. The reality is most people
are decent souls. Unfortunately we just notice the bad ones more.
