Today I got a new yardbird who got one of my other yardbirds! I was standing in the back yard filling a feeder when I heard a small bird alarm call from behind me. Suddenly, with a whoosh of black and white a NORTHERN SHRIKE flew right by me with a small bird in its talons. It lit in my bare forsythia bushes right next to a bunch of House Sparrows, dispatched the little bird, gave me a glance, then flew off with its breakfast towards the front yard. It all happened in a flash. I was still standing there with my mouth open. High melodrama in the back yard!
