3-17-08 -- Farmington, on the Farmington River, 1 COMMON LOON seen from Riverside Cemetery in the center of town. Also 1 BROWN CREEPER at Farmington feeder; a single bird, presumably the same one, has been present every few days since early winter.

The loon was actively feeding and diving and providing great loooks. This is a great spot for mergansers and other ducks (particularly when the water is lower and slower), but it's the first time I've seen a loon here.

The creeper was heading DOWN the trunk of our suet-holding tree, nuthatch fashion. I saw presumably the same bird exhibit this same behaviour earlier this winter on the same tree. Anyone else seen creepers go DOWN the trunk? I've never seen it before; usualy I see the fly-to-the-bottom-and-spiral-up pattern, or a straight UP from the bottom. Never top down. Comments?
