A nice day to do non car driving birding. I took a walk from my home on South St in Washington, CT down past the Region #12 High/Middle School (Shepaug School) to a nice marsh area just across the town line into Roxbury. This area has been fruitful in the past during Christmas Bird Counts. I walked into the former youth soccer field , from now Pickett Road, to a small pond by the field. Here I had 7 green-winged teal (5 males and two females), a pair of black ducks (this is good place to find them), and a pair of mallards. To reach this area from say Woodbury, take RT 47 towards Washington. After a few miles take a left on Nichols Hill Rd. At the second stop sign take a left on to South St. Follow South St past the Region #12 School. As you go down past the school look for an entrance to former soccer field on the left. One can drive into the field, the pond is on the right. If you reach a three way intersection with Davenport Rd you have gone past this
marsh and the entrance for the former soccer, which is a section of the Battle Swamp Brook
