[CT Birds] Who ARE those guys?

Saw my first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season today (other  than at 
Hammo), along with 2 Eastern Phoebes At the bridge over the Willimantic  River on 
Plains Road on the Mansfield-Coventry line.
I stopped at the foot of my street at Coventry Lake on the way  home and saw 
3 small ducks about 100 feet off the beach in our swimming  area.  They 
appeared to be quite small, perhaps the size of Bufflehead or  Coot, and 2 were very 
actively diving.  As the swimming area has a sand  bottom I assume diving for 
fish not vegitation.  The 2 diving appeared to  be females and there was 1 
"napping" who I believe was the male, and he did  not give me a very good look 
at him.    I have no idea what they,  and I'm sure I'll blush when i find out, 
but below are links to a number of  pictures.  All taken at Coventry Lake, 
3-27-08 at about 1 pm. Sky was very  gray and the birds were somewhat backlit.  
Pictures have not been altered  except for severe cropping, unless noted. it 
appears to me that the bills may  have a whitish tip and a dark spot in the 
middle, and there may be some pattern  to the head.  The male appeared to have a 
vague whitish area above the  waterline, but I didn't get a good look or any 
pics, as they swam away from me.  He also appears to have a black and white 
pattern on the back in the pic. There  appears to be some pattern on the heads.
I can hardly wait to find out how bad I blew  this.
