>From Jan Collins:
3/27 Batterson Pond, New Britain boat launch side, 4 PM the Ducks are
back: 1 pair LESSER SCAUP, 12-14 Ruddy Ducks, 1 pair Hooded Merganser,
several pairs of Bufflehead and Ring-necked ducks, numerous Common Mergs,
several mallards, and 3 Pied-billed grebes, one with a 4x1.5 inch fish which
was fascinating to watch him swallow (gave good looks of his breeding
plumage black throat) and then sit there like the cat that swallowed the
canary with the fish in his throat I assume waiting for it to go down all
the way! Also one Common Loon in gorgeous breeding plumage. Lots of gulls
and crows and a few Canada geese on the beach side but too far away to see
anything unusual. One turkey vulture overhead.
At home in Somers: the Carolina Wrens have decided to nest in the barn
again but this year have decided on one of the old phoebe nests up in the
rafters instead of on the shelf under my supply cupboard, a much better
choice for me! Also 1 flyover WOODCOCK at dusk.
