Hello Chris & CT Birders
There is no doubt in my mind that you did the right thing! The laws that are
in place concerning possession of wild birds and or feathers are there to
protect them from poachers, or individuals that would intentionally kill
birds of prey or for that matter any wild creature. Common sense must
prevail and every situation has to be evaluated and acted upon in an
appropriate way.

,I don't know if that is a good idea. I think the situation and common
sense comes into play as well, despite the rules and laws. I found a saw
whet owl lying in the road on my way to the grocery store one evening. It
had apparently been hit by a car. I pick it up, brought it home, put in in
a box in a dark area, went shopping where I bought raw liver, among other
groceries for my Siamese cat. When I returned, the owl had awakened and I
cut strips of raw liver, coated them in cat fur, and fed them to the owl with
a forceps, which readily gulped them down. I carefully put the owl out in a
conifer in the yard about 12 am, when it appeared recovered. A check at 1
am it was gone. Should I have let it lie in a busy street?

Hi all,
I haven't followed the owl discussion and I missed the details of the Hammo
story, but I did just pick up on Nick's comment about touching owls. If no
one has said this already (apologies if they have), everyone should know
that if you do grab/touch an owl, you are likely in violation of federal law
(probably state law too). Capturing birds is only permissible if you have
all the necessary banding/collecting permits, so you really shouldn't do it
with any bird for any reason (unless of course you have the permits).
