Please note that the 2008 Wildlife Rehabilitator's Directory is available on the DEP website at: http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2723&q=326228&depNav_GID=1655. This is the most up-to-date directory as this directory will be revised during the year.
Please note that no wildlife rehabilitators are authorized to care for bobcats, coyotes, black bears, or adult species of deer, raccoons, skunks or foxes.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />All wildlife rehabilitators are authorized to handle squirrels, rabbits, opossums, woodchucks and other small mammals. They may also care for house sparrows, starlings, pigeons and game birds such as wild turkey, ruffed grouse and ring-necked pheasants. Only individuals with federal permits are authorized to care for migratory birds such as songbirds, waterfowl, raptors and woodpeckers. Please try to refer calls regarding migratory birds only to those individuals who are specifically noted as being authorized to handle birds.
Please also note that individuals must be specifically authorized to handle Rabies Vector Species (RVS) or deer. These individuals may only care for immature raccoons, skunks, foxes or deer.
In accepting calls from the public regarding distressed RVS, it is essential that individuals be advised to avoid direct contact with the animal. If a person finds an orphaned raccoon, skunk or fox they should be advised of the following:
· DO NOT TOUCH THE ANIMAL DIRECTLY – Keep pets away.
· If the animal needs to be secured, wear heavy gloves and/or use a shovel or other implement to push it into a secure container, shelter or cardboard box. A clean, soft piece of material may be placed in the bottom of the box to keep the animal warm.
· Keep the animal in a quiet, warm place away from children and pets.
· Don’t feed the animal or give it water.
· Refer the
person to the nearest RVS Wildlife Rehabilitator.
