I received several requests for more information about Morse Beach - a
picture is worth a thousand words - but a series of pictures. If you
select this link you will download a 2 MB powerpoint slide. The
single slide contains an animation - overlaying aerial photos that
have been georeferenced - so the beaches are in the same spatial
position. Start the slide show the first image is 1968 - note the
pair of parallel wooded training walls that were built in the early
1960's to connect Old Field Creek to Long Island Sound. By 1968 the
beginnings of Morse Beach (Sandy Point above) are evident - growing
east around the south end of the training walls. Subsequent aerials
include 1974, 1980, 1986, 1991, 1995, and 2005. Go to maps.live.com
to see the significant changes at the point in 2007. Zoom in - turn
on aerials - and then turn on birds eye view - use the rotation arrows
on the left side to change the angle of the view. These are the new
2007 pictometry acquired by the State of CT. What future changes are
in store for Morse Beach - how much of this growth is dependent upon
the erosion of the beaches to the west that were nourished with sand
by the Corps of Engineers since the 1960's.
