4/12/08 I had two female Purple finches this morning. One at a feeder and the other on the ground gathering rootlets in its beak. It flew up into a tree with the rootlets and then flew off into the woods. I looked on Birds of North America and it said the females do the nest building and begin in April. I had 2 male Purple Finches and 2 females at a feeder last week. This is the latest I've had Purple Finches coming to the yard and this winter was the highest numbers I've ever had at a time - 8. Maybe I'll have nesting Purple Finches. My Phoebe pair have begun checking out their spot under the eaves at the corner of our deck.
