I went to the Pomfret CAS bird walk this morning - more below.
If someone is interested in OSPREY nesting inland in CT this may be
be relevant On

the way home I stopped at the marsh on the south side of US 44 a

couple of miles east of the intersection of 44 and CT 198. (In

Eastford I believe). As I went by I saw an OSPREY circling the

marsh.

By the time I got the car

parked and went back to look, 1 Osprey was on the nest they used last

year, and stayed for the 15 minutes or so I was there. I saw no sign

of a 2nd bird, and can't be certain the 1 I saw in the air was the 1

on the nest. This is the nest that I believe fledged at least 1

chick last year, an I'm happy to say they are apparently back to try

again. There are Great Blue Herons in the rookery there too, but so

far I've only seen 3 occupied nests and I counted 6 or 7 last year.

At Natchaug S F Beaver Dam Marsh:

25 or so Ring-necked Ducks

20 or so Canada Geese

6 Double Crested Cormorants

3 Great Blue Herons

At mansfield Hollow the sub-adult BALD EAGLE was in the dead pine

opposite the boat launch at about 4 pm.

At the Pleasant Valley Road pond there were 3 Wilson's Snipe, I male

Blue-winged Teal, and 14 Green-winged Teal.

Back to the Pomfret bird walk - birds seen on the walk:

At least 3 Louisiana Waterthrushes (At Mashmoquet Brook S P)

1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

1 Palm Warbler

1 Pine Warbler

Tree Swallows, Red-tail Hawks and the usual suspects.

Seen by me at the Wyndham Land Trust duck marsh after the walk:

2 Greater Yellowlegs

4 Green-winged Teal
In my yard when I got home I had 3 male PURPLE FINCHES on my platform
feeder - gorgeous plumage. May be the 1st males I've had here.
